New Guide for Managing High BP in Seniors

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have issued the first guidance specifically for the treatment of hypertension in patients 65 and older in the form of an expert consensus document.

In general, the target blood pressure should be less than 140/90 mm Hg, although the authors acknowledged that there was some uncertainty about whether patients 80 and older should have a different goal than those ages 65 to 79.

Fibrate Plus Statin May Pose Heart Risk to Women

WASHINGTON — The FDA said it was concerned about trial data suggesting that adding a fibrate drug to a statin increased the risk of cardiac events in women and will convene an advisory committee meeting next month to review the findings.

The agency was reacting to a new analysis of the ACCORD-Lipid trial, which tested the addition of delayed-release fenofibric acid (Trilipix) to simvastatin (Zocor) in diabetic patients.
Main results from the trial, announced in March 2010, indicated that the combination did not reduce cardiovascular events relative to patients receiving only the statin drug.

SVSU eyes exercise as preventive medicine

Exercise is being emphasized as a preventive medicine option at Saginaw Valley State University as the school joins a new initiative with Exercise is Medicine.

“This is a new initiative that we’re looking to incorporate into our wellness program,” said Cynthia Bala, associate director of human resources at SVSU. “It’s taking our wellness program to that next step.”
