SVSU eyes exercise as preventive medicine

Exercise is being emphasized as a preventive medicine option at Saginaw Valley State University as the school joins a new initiative with Exercise is Medicine.

“This is a new initiative that we’re looking to incorporate into our wellness program,” said Cynthia Bala, associate director of human resources at SVSU. “It’s taking our wellness program to that next step.”


Jeremy Knous, an associate professor of kinesiology at SVSU, said some people will exercise no matter what, but others need motivation.

The government guidelines state that adults should get 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise each week. Adults 65 or older can follow the same guidelines, or do as much as they are able to do.
