The sickest 5% of Americans account for over 40% of U.S. healthcare spending. The goal of disease management is to reduce costs and/or improve quality of life of patients afflicted with chronic diseases like congestive heart failure, cancer and chronic renal disease.
Disease management is a system of coordinated health care interventions that emphasizes outpatient care. In particular, it can significantly reduce the cost of healthcare treatment, reduce the burden on healthcare workers and enhance the overall quality of patient care. As such, disease management is the fastest growing sector of the healthcare product and services field.
