Vitamin D is featured in a duo of revised recommendations, one regarding appropriate daily reference intakes for this nutrient and the other focusing on its role in preventing falls in the elderly.
First, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has new recommendations for daily reference intakes for vitamin D and calcium across all. It was determined that most Americans up to age 70 years need no more than 600 IUs of vitamin D per day to maintain health.

Background. Inappropriate use of antibiotics in the intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with antimicrobial resistance, which can affect patient outcomes. Procalcitonin, a calcitonin precursor hormone, is a specific marker for bacterial infection in patients with sepsis.
The objective of the study was to determine whether an algorithm derived from the biomarker procalcitonin is effective in decreasing antibiotic exposure in the ICU.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. As well as publishing hand hygiene guidelines the WHO recently published the “Surgical Safety” checklist trial.
Published by the New England Journal of Medicine in 2009 it was a multicenter trial which demonstrated a decrease in mortality from 1.5% to 0.8% (p=0.003) after the introduction of a pre-op checklist.
As part of that checklist, it is recommended that prophylactic antibiotics be given BEFORE surgical incision. Interestingly, in the study, the authors also note a drop in surgical site infection rates from 6.2% to 3.4% (p<0.001)
