Switzerland Faces a lack of new GPs

Fewer and fewer young doctors in Switzerland are choosing to become general practitioners. If this continues, the decline in the number of GPs could have a serious effect on health care, they warn.

  • To better inform the general public of the situation, the association has launched a campaign demanding a change to health policy that encourages more students to embrace the profession.
  • Only 10% of medicine students plan on careers as family doctors. By 2021, it is expected that 75 per cent will have retired.

  • Young, healthy patients with early-stage colon cancer are more likely to be overtreated, whereas older, uninsured patients with higher-risk disease tend to be undertreated, according to an analysis of 236,964 cases.
  • Using the National Cancer Data Base, Dr. Chagpar and his colleagues in the department of surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, identified all patients diagnosed with colon cancer from 2003 to 2007. The database captures about 70% of all annual cancer diagnoses within the United States from more than 1,430 hospitals, and is a joint program of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the American Cancer Society.

  • This guideline is intended for the use of antimicrobial agents in managing patients with cancer who experience chemotherapy-induced fever and neutropenia.
  • Due to the previous iteration of this guideline in 2002, Department of Medicine, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska have a developed a clearer definition of which populations of patients with cancer may benefit most from antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral prophylaxis.
  • Categorizing neutropenic patients as being at high risk or low risk for infection according to presenting signs and symptoms, underlying cancer, type of therapy, and medical comorbidities has become essential to the treatment algorithm.
  • Risk stratification is a recommended starting point for managing patients with fever and neutropenia. Clinical vigilance and immediate treatment for all patients who present with fever and neutropenia should be treated swiftly and broadly with antibiotics to treat both gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.
