Afib Hospital Days Reduced With Dronedarone

Cardiovascular hospitalization and length of stay declined significantly in patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation or flutter treated with dronedarone (Multaq), a post hoc analysis of a large randomized trial showed.

First cardiovascular hospitalization occurred in 26% fewer patients treated with dronedarone versus placebo, and the rate of hospitalization for Afib was almost 40% lower with dronedarone. The total number of hospital days associated with Afib was reduced by about one third, including a significant reduction in the number of ICU/CCU days.

The trial involved 4,628 patients who had a mean age of 71.6 and were followed for 21 to 22 months.

Non-cardiac surgery: Safe for patients with heart device

With increasing number of cardiac patients, more and more need for the heart transplant is arising. Since there is always a donor organ shortage, a device has been used to support the end stage cardiac patients, while they are awaiting transplant.

This is a mechanical pump known as Left ventricular assist device (LVAD). It is also used for the support of end stage patients who are not for transplant. In USA, this device is used very frequently. In India it has not been used so far.

As these devices become a more common therapy for the treatment of end-stage heart failure, there are an increasing number of patients on device support who require various non-cardiac surgical procedures.
