Agriculture and Health and Human Services of USA released the Latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans

On 3rd Feb 2011 – The departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services of US have released the latest, “The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans”. This evidence based guidelines has been drafted by the committee in consultation with experts and is based on reports from Institute of Medicine of America. The nutritional guidance aims improved nutrition and physical activity by promoting health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, prevalence of obesity.

The Latest Dietary Guidelines

  • Encourages eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and seafood.
  • The dietary reference intake reports evaluates each nutrients importance to human health, summarizes the effects of excessive and inadequate intakes and determines the amounts people need based on gender and age.
  • Emphasizes on salt reduction leading to a new government standards for salt which manufacturers and restaurants need to meet.
  • Updates the recommended range of weight that pregnant women at various BMI levels should gain.
  • Provides a comprehensive, multipronged strategy to encourage children to eat more healthy foods and less high-calorie and increase physical activity.
  • Proposes steps that should be taken by communities, schools, health care providers, parents and the business community.
