Top 5 Don’ts for Doctors in Primary Care

Over investigated, over treated has been the lament of Indian patients. Doctors blame patients ‘They ask for it’. Patients are losing faith in medicos at large.

Often seen is a case given Statins for high LDL cholesterol with NO counseling on life style change/ physical exercise. Without blaming others, let us clean our own act!

A panel of 15 physicians analyzed medical literature to compile top-five “don’t” lists of health care activities that are wasteful because they are not supported by evidence. Examples from the three top-five lists include:

  • imaging for low back pain of less than six months when neurological deficits are not present;
  • ordering blood chemistry panels or urinalyses for screening in healthy adults; (though screening for cholesterol was recommended, as was diabetes screening in some cases)
  • prescribing antibiotics for sinusitis; and a
  • Annual electrocardiograms for asymptomatic patients.
