One of the biggest challenges for any student preparing for exams is stress.
Being locked up with textbooks, without the company of friends or outings, is no easy task and counsellors insist stress management is crucial to good academic performance.

Signs of stress include bad temper, loss of appetite and sleeplessness – students as well as parents should be on the watch for these.
“Taking time out to laugh and being around positive people boosts confidence. Eating well and getting quality sleep is also important,” Dr Samir Malhotra, consultant psychiatrist at Fortis hospital, said.

Parents should try and create a positive environment for the student preparing for exams, otherwise psychological problems abound.
They should encourage small breaks between study sessions as they improve concentration.

Exercise is one of the biggest stressbusters.
Involvement of the family in physical activities is crucial. “Regular exercise breaks during study sessions improve performance, regulate mood and strengthen the immune system, which is particularly hit during the exam period,” Dr Sharma said.
