Meticulous management of ocular surface disease is critical to the successful treatment of ocular allergies, a speaker said here.

Michael B. Raizman, MD, presented pearls at Hawaiian Eye 2012 on the treatment of ocular allergies. He outlined five strategies for effective management: treating dry eye, treating blepharitis, recognizing eye lid itching, managing contact lens wear and educating patients to avoid allergies.

“You have to look for the signs of dry eye. It won’t always be as obvious as lissamine green staining,” he said.
With proper management, most contact lens wearers do not have to forego their lenses because of allergies, Dr. Raizman said. They should use daily disposable lenses, change lenses more frequently, switch contact lens solutions and, if these measures fail, stop wearing contact lenses, he said.
SomeĀ  most effective once-daily topical antihistamines, according to Dr. Raizmanwere highlighted.Steroids such as Lotemax (loteprednol etabonate ophthalmic ointment 0.05%, Bausch + Lomb) are best suited for the most challenging cases, Dr. Raizman said.
Patients should avoid dust mites, minimize contact with pets, use air conditioning, and wash hands, face and hair to avoid allergens, he said.
