The DCRI’s Manesh Patel, MD, contributed to a new set of guidelines for physicians who perform cardiovascular surgery.

• This year the American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) and the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a new set of guidelines for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
• The procedure, during which surgeons graft additional arteries onto coronary arteries to improve blood flow, is used to treat angina and reduce the risk of heart attacks.
• The new guidelines, developed by Patel and his colleagues on the ACCF/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines, incorporated the latest cardiovascular research into recommendations for clinical practice.
• The task force comprises experts in CABG surgery, interventional cardiology, general cardiology, and cardiovascular anesthesiology, and it includes representatives from the ACCF, AHA, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
• The guidelines include recommendations for anesthetic management, echocardiography, pre- and postoperative procedures, and treatment for certain types of patients.
• The ACCF Board of Trustees and the AHA Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee approved the guidelines in July.
• The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons gave their approval the next month, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery followed in September.
• The guidelines appeared in Circulation, Anesthesia & Analgesia, and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
