Non availability of an Antiviral protective mask was severely felt with the outbreak of H1N1 virus. At last FDA approves BioMask made by a Hong Kong–based company found to be effective against most influenza viruses. It is said to be effective against H1N1 virus also.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted market clearance to the first treated surgical facemask that promises to inactivate virtually all strains of the influenza virus in 5 minutes. The mask features plastic coating on the outer layer and a second inner layer treated with metal ions, “which form ionic bonds with negatively-charged side-groups on influenza viruses.”

The company notes on its Web site that “The masks are intended to be worn by operating room personnel during surgical procedures, to protect both the surgical patient, and the operating room personnel, from the transfer of micro-organisms, body fluids and particulate material.”
