It has been noted that antioxidants play a role in reducing CVD. A recent study shows that they are effective in reducing AF, arrhythmia after cardiac surgery.

Prophylactic use of antioxidant vitamins C and E may significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) and all-cause arrhythmia following cardiac surgery, UK researchers say.
Furthermore, antioxidant therapy could potentially reduce hospital resource utilization and financial cost due to a concomitant reduction in hospital stay.

Beta-blockers are currently recommended as the first-line therapy for POAF after cardiac surgery, but are associated with treatment failure, toxicity, and arrhythmia, therefore quantitatively investigated antioxidant therapy as an alternative.

Further analysis revealed that antioxidant therapy significantly reduced ITU stay by a weighted mean difference (WMD) of 0.44 days, and hospital stay by a WMD of 1.11 days compared with the controls, without significant heterogeneity between trials.

They concluded that it should also consider cost analysis to establish the potential economic benefit of antioxidant vitamin therapy as routine prophylaxis in POAF.
