It makes little difference to the risk of MI, stroke, or death whether chronic aspirin therapy is discontinued earlier than five days or within five days of CABG surgery

Withdrawal of aspirin within five days of surgery in the analysis was associated with greater need for peri- and postoperative transfusion. Later aspirin withdrawal doesn’t necessarily always tip the balance of risk in favor of stopping aspirin earlier, as that could leave some patients at increased risk of preoperative cardiac events

The need is for weighing benefit vs risk in individual patients when deciding how long before CABG to suspend chronic aspirin therapy.

Mineral Transporters

Posted by: admin on: April 25, 2011

Late in the l950s it was discovered that cells of the female breasts becoming malignant are going to lose magnesium so we thought why not conceive of an extra-active transport principle to take magnesium into these cells with the help of phenylalanine and paraminobenzoic acid.

We developed, in fulfilling the requirements of more active transport of potassium and magnesium into the cell, the potassium-magnesium aspartate in 1957-1958. This became quite successful world-wide as a medicament for the protection of myocardial necrosis, enhancement of liver functions and the detoxification of digitalis.

Since this has been so successful, we followed this concept of active mineral transport and we changed as well the mineral which had to be transported as also the molecules which are suitable to transport the mineral into a cell by means of artificially created active transport. So the most important transporters we have today are aspartic acid, 2-aminoethylphosphoric acid and orotic acid.

Failure to thrive – initial management

Posted by: admin on: April 25, 2011

Introduction

Failure to thrive is a descriptive term for those children less than 5 years of age who have poor weight gain.
Classically failure to thrive has been described as weight less than the 3rd centile on two or more separate occasions, or weight which crosses two centile lines over time. While such findings should alert clinicians to look for a significant problem, it is important to remember that at least 5% of healthy normal children will fulfill these criteria and that many healthy children don’t follow the apparent growth trajectories suggested by the lines on the charts.

Energy Drinks Pose Serious Health Risks for Young People

Posted by: admin on: April 25, 2011

A lack of research and regulation associated with energy drinks, combined with reports of toxicity and high consumption, may result in potentially dangerous health consequences in children, adolescents, and young adults, according to a review of

According to the review, self-report surveys indicate that energy drinks are regularly consumed by 30% to 50% of children, adolescents, and young adults. The current trial questions the use of energy drinks in these young populations, as they provide no therapeutic benefit and are associated with risks for serious adverse health effects.

Treatment of acute migraine headache

Posted by: admin on: April 25, 2011

Migraine headache is a common and potentially debilitating disorder often treated by family physicians.

Before diagnosing migraine, serious intracranial pathology must be ruled out.

Treating acute migraine is challenging because of substantial rates of nonresponse to medications and difficulty in predicting individual response to a specific agent or dose. Data comparing different drug classes are relatively scarce. Abortive therapy should be used as early as possible after the onset of symptoms.
