The hospitalisation of 14 school children because of the government’s de-worming program points to the need for specific guidelines.

  • Random de-worming is not the right way and mass administration is not advisable, said Dr MP Sharma, internal medicine specialist
  • A mapping process should be carried out to determine where the procedure is required and should be done only once a year.
  • The frequency of treatment also depends on the prevalence and intensity of infection.
  • Schools with high prevalence of infection should be treated twice a year while those with moderate prevalence, which ranges between 20 to 50 per cent, only once, internal medicine specialist Dr Sudhir Sharma, said.
  • Administering medication in the right way is crucial.
  • It should be taken at night and not on an empty stomach.
  • Problems can be triggered if these precautions aren’t adhered too, Dr Babita Jain of Max Healthcare said.
